Merrill's K9 Academy

Merrill's Detector Dog Service's brand NEW service! Over the years, people have continued to ask members of our staff if we could train their 4-legged friends. We are now happy to announce we will be offering private lessons and group obedience courses! This service will ONLY be offered in the Central Maine area, with group classes held at our office located in Readfield, Maine. We have two master trainers who have extensive backgrounds working with and training different types of dogs. Scroll down to see the vaccination and COVID-19 protocols, along with the courses we are offering. We are so excited to offer this new service to the Central Maine community and look forward to training you and your canine!

Vaccination Requirements

For Group Classes, we require your canine to be up to date on certain vaccines for the health of your dog and others! You must provide proof your dog is up to date on the following vaccines upon arrival or have your vet provide us a copy via email:

  • Rabies

  • Distemper 

  • Bordetella

COVID-19 Protocols

Prior to entering our facility, a series of questions will be asked to ensure the health and safety of participants.

All participants will be required to wear a face mask upon entering our facility and any time social distancing guidelines cannot be followed.

During group classes and private sessions, when participants are 6 feet apart, masks can be removed.

Course List

Basic Obedience COurse

Our Basic Obedience course is the perfect start for your new or young dog!

This class focuses on creating a great foundation for you and your new friend. Our basic course will cover things from potty training techniques, to sit, down, place, name recognition and recall!

We are offering this class as private lessons or in a 5-week group class!

Additional pricing plans available for private lessons:

- e-collar training in private basic obedience lessons

- 2 dogs in the same household

This class is perfect for a new dog and puppy.

Intermediate Obedience


There are 2 options for Intermediate Classes:

-Intermediate Obedience Group Class (6 weeks)

-AKC Canine Good Citizen Class

(6 weeks)

To attend these classes, you must first have gone through our basic obedience course. 

If you believe your dog can go through these classes without the basic obedience course, please sign up for a 30-minute consultation. You must pass the final test of the basic obedience course in order to qualify for these classes. 



Our Advanced Courses will be available in 5-week sessions. We will be offering five different courses, including:

-Off-Leash Obedience

*ACK CGC Course Required*

-Trick Class Basics


*Basic Obedience Course Required*

-Nose Work


*Basic Obedience Course Required*

(Limit of 5 people per class)

Behavior Modification

Our Behavior Modification service will only be offered in a one-on-one private setting. We will work with you and your canine to improve some more serious behavioral issues. 

Please book behavior modification consultation, so we can learn more about your situation and how best to proceed with your training plan.
